About Ucluelet
Ucluelet is pronounced “Yew-kloo-let” and means “Safe Harbour” in the Nuu-chah-nulth language. To locals and those of us that get tongue tied, our little town is affectionately called Ukee.
Ucluelet is a nature lover’s paradise. The town is located on the southern end of the Ucluth Peninsula; the region is known for its rugged beauty, wild coastline, dense rainforest, and an uncomplicated way of life. It’s a magical place to embrace nature, offering unforgettable encounters with the wild, a place to let your adventurous spirit take over, to enjoy the hospitality of the locals or just a place to loose track of time.
The town itself is a vibrant community that thrives on outdoor recreation and ecotourism. Life is taken a little bit more leisurely with a focus on balancing fun, family, and business. Surfing and fishing ~ they are like a religion here. Don’t be surprised to see a “gone surfin’” sign on a business door or to see the waitress that served you lunch hitting the waves before the dinner rush. And don’t look for your typical big name stores or fast food retailers. You will not find them in Ucluelet or Tofino. The community focuses on the entrepreneurial spirit of its residents and the big brands are not welcome.
